There was a great review on bedbugs that came out of the New England Journal of Medicine1.
Bed bugs can survive on a human host for 4-5 months
Even without a human host, they survive for up to 70 days...
Most of them are resistant to permethrin now, so the best source control is vacuuming/steaming
